Methodology & FAQ

How the Pro Score works, how owner reviews are moderated, and how we stay independent.

What is Skiff Review?
Skiff Review is an independent review platform for shallow-water skiffs, microskiffs, technical poling skiffs, and hybrid bay boats. We combine verified owner reviews, hands-on Pro-Reviewer analysis, and a normalized spec dataset so anglers can compare skiffs honestly — without the marketing gloss.
What is the Pro Score and how is it calculated?
The Pro Score is the rating shown on rankings, comparison cards, and the model detail page. It starts from the average of real owner reviews, then adjusts measurable categories — specifically Draft (using published poling draft) and Value (using base price) — against the averages for the model's length class. Subjective categories (Ride, Build, Poleability, Layout) are never adjusted. Owner Ratings on the model page remain unedited so you can always see the raw signal. The goal is a builder-neutral score that stays fair across size classes: a 17' micro and a 22' bay skiff aren't penalized against each other for attributes that naturally differ by platform.
Are owner reviews real or moderated?
Every owner review is manually reviewed by our moderation team before publishing. Verified Owner badges require proof of ownership (registration, dealer paperwork, or serial-number confirmation). Reviews flagged as demo or seed data are excluded from the public aggregate rating and from all structured data sent to search engines and AI platforms. Builders cannot edit, remove, or reorder owner reviews.
What's the difference between a Pro Reviewer and an owner review?
Pro Reviewers are vetted anglers — typically guides, captains, or long-time industry testers — who have been approved into our professional tier and have a public profile page at /pros/{username}. Their reviews carry a Pro badge and receive a sticky rank on the model page. Owner reviews come from verified owners, former owners, or demo-ride customers and make up the majority of content. Both feed into the aggregate, but Pro Reviews are explicitly labeled so readers can weigh them accordingly.
How do builders get listed on SkiffReview?
Every actively-produced shallow-water skiff we can verify gets a page in the catalog — builders do not pay to be listed, and listing is not contingent on any business relationship. Builders can claim their page to correct specs, add bio copy, and respond to reviews. Editorial decisions (rankings, the Pro Score formula, review moderation) are made independently of any commercial arrangement.
Can I trust the reviews and rankings?
Yes — that's the whole point. Rankings are assembled by the editorial team using the Pro Score, not by advertising spend or builder relationships. Owner reviews are moderated for spam and abuse, not for sentiment. If a builder disputes a review, we investigate, but we don't remove negative reviews simply because a manufacturer asks. Our full methodology, review moderation rules, and correction policy live here on the About page precisely so you can verify how we work.
